Why Education and Training is Important to your Hospice and Palliative Care Team?

Advancements in medical care have made many once-terminal conditions manageable, eradicated certain diseases and boosted life expectancies in general, creating the relatively new medical specialties of hospice and palliative care. Both hospice and palliative care extend beyond traditional medical treatments and include addressing pain management, as well as the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones.

With more patients than ever before seeking hospice and palliative care there is concern that there may not be enough trained clinicians to provide services. As reported in the April 2019 edition of Hospice News, currently the United States has 13.35 hospice and palliative care specialists for every 100,000 adults 65 and older. An April 2018 study estimated that by 2040 the patient population will need 10,640 to 24,000 specialists; supply is expected to range between 8,100 and 19,000. The article went on to say that in 2015, less than half of hospital palliative care programs met national staffing standards set by The Joint Commission.

Medical advances and emerging treatment options make continuing education and training for hospice and palliative care clinical staff crucial. Equally important for both clinical and nonclinical members of interdisciplinary teams is how to best meet the non-medical needs of the patient and their loved ones; how to communicate compassionately, yet effectively in what can be emotionally charged situations; and how to stay up to date on evolving compliance and regulatory mandates.

Training and professional development opportunities are also key elements to attract and retain a competent and high-quality staff. Research has shown that staff are more likely to remain with organizations that make training available.

One of the best ways organizations can be assured their staff has access to current operational and clinical education and training is to become a member of the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association (CHAPCA). With a combination of webinars, workshops, events, on-line training programs and conferences, CHAPCA makes a wide selection of training options available to its members to learn best practices that enable them to deliver the highest quality care to their patients and their loved ones, including:
