As a new nurse in 20 16, I was hired by Mission Hospice and Home Care in San Mateo. I spent 3 ye ars in the field as an admissions nurse and then case manager. When medical aid in dying law passed, our Mission Hospice teams discussed how we would go forward as an organization to support our patients who requested this op tion. We did not hesitate in offering support to patients and provided our staff with the option of participating or not in care for a patient who was planning to or even considering end of life option act. I opted to partici pate and support our patients who now had this option available.
In t he last 2 years I have been in the clinical manager position though often c ase manage for some of our patients. I was RNCM this year for a woman and for whom life had become unbearable due to her lung cancer with metastasis to her brain. She was on our service for quite a while with some decline o ver the time but most notably in July and August She was strong, stoic and mostly loved her family fiercely. She did not want to be dependent on other s for her care once her cancer incapacitated her functionally and cognitive ly. I joined her, her husband, 2 adult children, her sister and companio n cat on the day she ingested medication. Our patient had walked the hall s at the Capitol in Sacramento the night before the vote was to take place for the right to choose medical aid in dying. It was an honor to have know n her, been present when she died and to now participate in this effort to continue educating about and supporting this law that has provided relief f rom suffering for those who chose to end their lives on their own terms. p>
