Program Description:

Coding continues to be important for hospices – coding of not just the terminal diagnosis but related and unrelated comorbidities. Hospice must consider the principal diagnosis of the patient, all other health conditions, whether related or unrelated to the terminal condition, and all clinically relevant information supporting all diagnoses.  The coder must be properly trained to ensure all diagnoses are coded correctly and to the highest level of specificity.

Laterality & specificity are required for accurate coding and lack of details as well as coding the appropriate comorbidities may impact future hospice payment models. For optimum coding, all levels of staff need to be involved: Admissions staff, Clinicians, Supervisors and QAPI team.    Please bring your ICD-10-CM Manuals to class.
